23 November 1907 – 7 January 2014

The godfather of kung fu movies has passed. Sir Run Run Shaw, one of the pioneers of the Chinese film industry, co-founder of the Shaw Brothers film studio, passed away yesterday. He was 106. He had been involved in the film industry from the age of 19 and had a considerable impact on both Malaysian and Singaporean cinema.

A little known fact. Sir Run Run Shaw was one of the producers of Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi cult classic, Blade Runner. He stepped in (along with The Ladd Company (through Warner Bros.) and Tandem Productions) to finance the film after early financier Filmways pulled their backing.

Check out The Guardian’s take on some of the key films from the long and illustrious career of Sir Run Run Shaw.
